Social media giant Meta has announced a $10 billion investment to build a massive 1-gigawatt data center campus in Lebanon, Indiana, marking one of the company’s largest infrastructure projects to date.
The state-of-the-art facility, located 30 miles northwest of Indianapolis, will span 4 million square feet and support Meta’s growing artificial intelligence workloads alongside platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Expected to be operational by late 2027 or early 2028, the campus represents Meta’s 30th data center in the United States.
“As AI advances and compute demands continue to grow, gigawatt sites like this one will be critical to advancing the technology,” said Rachel Peterson, Meta’s Vice President of Data Centers. The investment is part of Meta’s broader capital expenditure plans of $115-135 billion for 2026.
Addressing community concerns about utility costs and environmental impact, Meta has committed $1 million annually for 20 years to assist local families with energy bills. The company will invest over $120 million in water infrastructure and match 100% of its electricity use with clean energy, targeting LEED Gold certification.

The project will create over 4,000 construction jobs at peak and approximately 300 permanent operational positions. Meta’s massive infrastructure push comes amid fierce AI competition, with Google planning $180 billion and Amazon $200 billion in AI-related expenditures for 2026.
The facility will utilize closed-loop liquid cooling systems and partner with local farmers to restore 200 million gallons of water annually to watersheds, demonstrating Meta’s commitment to sustainable AI infrastructure development.
