OpenAI has expanded the availability of its AI coding assistant Codex by integrating it into the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android users, allowing developers to manage and monitor coding workflows directly from their smartphones.
The feature is currently being introduced in preview mode and is being rolled out across all ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go tiers, in supported regions.
The move aims to give developers greater flexibility by enabling them to stay connected to coding environments and review ongoing tasks even while away from their desktop systems.
Developers Can Monitor Coding Projects on the Go
With the latest update, users can connect the ChatGPT mobile app to systems running Codex, including:
- Laptops
- Mac minis
- Development boxes
- Managed remote environments
The mobile integration allows users to review project outputs, approve commands, switch AI models, create new tasks and track ongoing coding threads directly from their phones.
According to OpenAI, developers can now manage workflows remotely without constantly returning to desktop environments.
Real-Time Updates Synced to Mobile Devices
OpenAI said the mobile experience supports real-time syncing of key project updates, including:
- Screenshots
- Terminal outputs
- Code differences (diffs)
- Test results
- Approval requests
The company clarified that files, permissions, credentials and sensitive resources remain on the connected machine while only relevant project updates are reflected within the mobile app.
Over 4 Million Weekly Codex Users
The company also revealed that Codex has crossed a major usage milestone, with more than 4 million users now using the AI coding assistant every week.
OpenAI further announced that remote SSH support and hooks are now generally available across all plans, expanding remote development capabilities.
For Enterprise and Business customers, the company has also introduced programmatic access tokens to enable deeper integrations and workflow automation.
Healthcare and Enterprise Features Expanded
OpenAI said HIPAA-compliant use of Codex in local environments will be supported for eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces, opening opportunities for healthcare and enterprise-focused applications where regulatory compliance is essential.
The company also confirmed that support for connecting the ChatGPT mobile app with Codex running on Windows systems will be introduced in the near future.
Focus on AI-Powered Development Workflows
The expansion of Codex to mobile devices reflects the growing trend of AI-assisted software development and remote productivity tools.
