OpenAI has unveiled GPT-6 Astra, its latest frontier artificial intelligence model, describing it as the company’s most intelligent and aligned system so far. Launched on September 3, the model is designed to move beyond conventional question-answering by handling complex, multi-step tasks across professional and technical domains.
Astra brings significant improvements in computer use, software engineering, scientific research, cybersecurity and data-driven professional work. It can interact with digital environments, browse websites, fill online forms, work with software and support tasks such as creating documents, analysing data and developing websites.
OpenAI has also highlighted Astra’s performance on advanced benchmarks, including FrontierMath Tier 4 and ARC-AGI-3, where the company reports exceptionally high scores. The model has also demonstrated stronger capabilities in scientific problem-solving and complex reasoning.
Cybersecurity is another major focus. OpenAI says Astra has reached its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold, with the ability to identify previously unknown vulnerabilities. Because these capabilities can potentially be misused, access to the most advanced cybersecurity functions is being restricted while additional safeguards are implemented.

The launch has also renewed discussions around Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). OpenAI President Greg Brockman suggested that Astra could eventually be viewed as a milestone in the arrival of the AGI era, although the company’s official documentation focuses on the model’s capabilities and safety rather than formally declaring AGI.
GPT-6 Astra is being rolled out gradually to organisations and is expected to reach ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, along with API developers.
