SpaceX is expanding beyond the space sector with plans to establish a specialised turbine blade and vane foundry in Bastrop, Texas, as the rapid growth of artificial intelligence creates an increasing need for reliable power. CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the company is developing in-house capabilities to manufacture critical components used in natural gas turbines.

The move is aimed at addressing a major bottleneck in the power-generation supply chain. Gas turbine manufacturers are facing long lead times for specialised turbine components, making it difficult for data-centre operators to bring new electricity capacity online quickly. Musk said producing the blades and vanes internally could potentially reduce deployment timelines by up to 18 months.

The proposed facility will be located near SpaceX’s existing Starlink manufacturing operations in Bastrop, around 48 kilometres from Austin. The company has also acquired significant land in the area as it expands its manufacturing footprint.

The development reflects the growing link between AI infrastructure and energy capacity. As data centres require increasingly large amounts of electricity, technology companies are exploring new ways to secure power and overcome infrastructure constraints.

While SpaceX and Tesla continue to invest in solar energy, Musk has indicated that natural gas will remain important for meeting additional electricity requirements in the near term. The Texas foundry could therefore support SpaceX’s broader AI and data-centre ambitions while also reducing dependence on external turbine-component suppliers.

The initiative highlights how the AI boom is increasingly influencing not only computing infrastructure but also the manufacturing and energy sectors.
