Air India embraces cloud technology, shuts down legacy data centers By Elets News Network - 06 December 2023

Air India

Air India declared that it has closed its two data centers in Mumbai and New Delhi and moved its processing activity to the cloud. It is anticipated that the action will save Air India $1 million a year.

In Kochi, Gurugram, and Silicon Valley, Air India teams oversaw the transfer to Microsoft Azure.

Air India’s computational infrastructure now uses a ‘Cloud-only’ strategy. For us, cloud computing is a fundamental means to reinvent computing, not simply about cost reductions and operational efficiencies “said Air India’s Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Satya Ramaswamy.

The computational workloads from servers, data, equipment, and mainframes were moved. The airline’s commercial and financial operations were previously automated and innovated using the now-closed data centers.

In the early years of the computing age, Air India was among the first to deploy high-performance computing and storage.

“Air India’s successful migration to Microsoft Azure demonstrates the power and adaptability of the Microsoft Cloud, and how we can effectively support leaders in the global airline industry like Air India,” said Puneet Chandok, President at Microsoft India & South Asia.

After Air India was acquired by the Tata Group in January of last year, it started a five-year reform program.
To increase consumer engagement and operational efficiencies, the airline stated in April that it plans to introduce several innovations in its staff experiences and customer-facing channels. To address challenging optimisation problems, Air India is also investigating cutting-edge developments like quantum computing.

The airline has already spent over $200 million on staff development, digital engineering services, and new digital systems. Over the next five years, it plans to keep investing at this rate to catch up to elite airlines and implement cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
