Microsoft has announced a $10 billion investment in Japan between 2026 and 2029, marking one of its largest regional commitments in recent years. The announcement was made during a visit to Tokyo by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.

The investment will focus on expanding AI infrastructure and strengthening cybersecurity collaboration with the Japanese government, as the country accelerates its adoption of advanced technologies.

As part of the initiative, Microsoft plans to train 1 million engineers and developers by 2030, addressing the growing demand for skilled talent in AI and digital technologies. The company will also collaborate with domestic firms such as SoftBank and Sakura Internet to expand Japan-based AI computing capacity.

This will enable enterprises and government agencies to store and process sensitive data within the country, while still leveraging Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.

Additionally, Microsoft will deepen its partnership with Japanese authorities to share intelligence on cyber threats and enhance crime prevention mechanisms, reinforcing the country’s digital security framework.

The move comes amid rising AI adoption in Japan, with nearly 20% of the working-age population already using generative AI tools, according to Microsoft data. At the same time, government estimates suggest a potential shortfall of over 3 million AI and robotics professionals by 2040, underscoring the urgency of large-scale investments in infrastructure and talent development.

Microsoft’s latest commitment highlights its strategic focus on Japan as a key market in the global AI race, aligning with the country’s push to strengthen its digital economy and technological resilience.
