Duolingo has rolled out 148 new language courses in a sweeping expansion that more than doubles its total offerings, marking the most ambitious content update in the company’s history. This strategic move increases access to its top non-English language courses across all 28 app interface languages, significantly widening its global reach.

The newly introduced courses feature Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin, now available to learners in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. These courses primarily support beginner proficiency levels aligned with the CEFR A1–A2 standards and come equipped with engaging features like DuoRadio for listening practice and Stories to build reading comprehension. Advanced-level content is slated for release in the near future.

Duolingo’s CEO and co-founder, Luis von Ahn, highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in enabling this expansion. “This is a clear example of how generative AI can transform education and scale learning,” he said. “Our investment in AI and automation has allowed us to produce high-quality content faster and more efficiently than ever before.”

The company also confirmed that it is moving toward an “AI-first” operational model. As part of this transition, Duolingo plans to phase out human contractors in favor of AI systems for tasks that can be automated. Future hiring will prioritize roles where automation is not yet feasible.

This shift is facilitated by Duolingo’s new shared content system, which allows the development of core language courses that can then be rapidly localized for different users. Jessie Becker, senior director of learning design, explained, “Previously, developing a single course could take years. With generative AI, we’re now able to accelerate that process and devote our experts’ time to more critical educational work.”

The expansion particularly boosts access to Asian languages. For instance, Spanish and Portuguese speakers in Latin America can now learn Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin, while European users who speak French, German, Italian, or Spanish can also study these languages. In Asia, Duolingo now offers its top seven languages — including Japanese and Korean — to speakers of 12 regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Thai.

This major rollout underscores Duolingo’s mission to make high-quality language education accessible to everyone, everywhere — and increasingly, with the help of AI.
