Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has joined hands with enterprise AI orchestration platform Workato on a joint offering that uses agentic AI to move legacy integrations onto modern infrastructure, targeting one of the least glamorous but most stubborn reasons enterprise AI programmes stall before reaching production.

The offering pairs TCS’s GenAI-Led Modernization Workbench with Workato AIRO, the multi-agent system that now serves as the main interface of the Workato platform. The aim is to help large organisations migrate integrations built on older integration, API and iPaaS platforms faster, with governance and traceability built in.

The problem: AI sitting on old plumbing

Most enterprises experimenting with generative and agentic AI quickly discover that a capable model is only part of the answer. AI agents need to read from and act on dozens of business systems, and in many organisations the connections between those systems still run on legacy environments that are slow and expensive to change by hand. Both companies argue that unless this integration layer is modernised, AI pilots struggle to scale.

How the joint offering works

The TCS workbench first scans a client’s existing integration estate and produces a business requirements document describing what each integration actually does. Workato AIRO then reads that document, builds the equivalent automation “recipes” and connections on Workato, creates test scripts, and validates and self-heals the output, while keeping people in the loop to review the work.

The companies stress that conversion is the final step rather than the first. Customers begin by deciding which integrations to modernise, replace or retire, and only then convert the ones worth keeping.

The numbers TCS is reporting

Compared with manual migration approaches, TCS says the combined approach delivers:

  • About 70% less discovery and assessment effort, cutting weeks of analysis to days
  • Migration delivery that is around 10 times faster
  • Roughly 80% less overall engineering effort across build, testing and documentation
  • Full traceability from each legacy source to every new Workato recipe

David Ng, Global VP for Partner, GTM and Alliances at Workato, said that because AI programmes depend on the integrations beneath them, documenting the legacy estate and letting AIRO rebuild and test it, with human review, is what allows the first governed AI use case to carry into the next. Shailesh Ghaisas, Chief Architect for Enterprise Integration at TCS, said AIRO brings speed and precision to the process, letting TCS consultants protect business intent while delivering high-quality integrations significantly faster.

Why it matters for CIOs

The tie-up fits a broader pattern among Indian IT majors, which are increasingly positioning agentic AI not just as a new product line but as a tool to accelerate the modernisation work that clients have long deferred. TCS has set itself the goal of becoming the world’s largest AI-led technology services company, and partnerships like this one aim to turn that ambition into measurable delivery gains.

For technology leaders, the message is pragmatic: before scaling AI agents across the business, fix the integration layer they will depend on, and insist on governance and traceability as that work is automated.
