Perplexity AI, a search engine challenging Google, is gearing up to establish a presence in India. The company is seeking a candidate to drive its strategic growth in the region. The announcement was made on January 11 by Perplexity CEO and co-founder Aravind Srinivas, who specified via LinkedIn that the candidate must be based in India and ready to travel to meet strategic partners and institutions. Applicants are required to email their resumes along with a brief note detailing notable achievements to india@perplexity.ai, Srinivas added.

The hiring announcement comes after Srinivas’s visit to India, during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Srinivas, who studied at IIT Madras, said they discussed the potential for AI use in India and globally.


Perplexity AI was launched in December 2022 by Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. The company’s main product is an “answer engine” that uses AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. It provides answers to user queries and includes links to sources such as news outlets, academic papers, and blogs.

The company states that all responses are supported by citations, aiming to enhance trust and transparency in AI-driven search results. Perplexity has already garnered a user base of over 10 million active users globally. The company claims that every response includes citations, which are intended to improve reliability and transparency. It says it has more than 10 million active users worldwide.

Perplexity AI has gained attention in the technology sector for its new approach to search engines and is viewed as a competitor to major players like Google. The startup is funded by investors such as Jeff Bezos, Tobi Lutke, Nvidia, and Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). It recently raised over $500 million in funding, valuing the company at $9 billion.
