Meta has introduced a new Scam Alert feature on WhatsApp that uses on-device machine learning to identify potentially fraudulent messages and warn users before they fall victim to scams. The feature is currently being tested in a limited beta.

When WhatsApp detects suspicious activity, users will receive a warning and can choose to block, report or dismiss the alert. They can also mark a conversation as trusted to prevent future warnings for that chat.

The scam detection system processes messages on the user’s device, helping WhatsApp maintain privacy while identifying potential scams. Users can optionally share their last five messages with WhatsApp to help improve detection accuracy. Meta says message content is not automatically reported or sent off the device for classification.

The move adds to WhatsApp’s existing anti-scam measures, as the platform faces growing risks from fraud schemes including investment scams, impersonation and other forms of financial deception.
