Nvidia CEO Discusses Plans for Desktop Chip Collaboration with MediaTek By Elets News Network - 08 January 2025

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, confirmed that MediaTek will be able to sell the desktop CPU developed jointly by the two companies. He also hinted at undisclosed future uses for the chip.

At CES 2025 on Monday, Nvidia introduced Project DIGITS, a desktop computer featuring its latest “Blackwell” AI chip and priced at $3,000. The system also includes a new CPU, co-designed with MediaTek.

During an investor presentation, Huang explained that Nvidia partnered with MediaTek to develop an energy-efficient CPU. This arrangement allows MediaTek to offer the CPU to Nvidia and retain the option to sell it independently.

Huang described the collaboration as mutually beneficial, stating that MediaTek now has the flexibility to both supply the CPU to Nvidia for its products and sell the CPU independently to other customers in the market, making it a win-win for both parties.

Nvidia is developing a PC CPU, as reported by media channels, to compete with Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Qualcomm. These companies currently dominate the market for computers used by both individual consumers and businesses.

The Project DIGITS computer is not intended for general consumer use. It operates on a Linux-based system designed by Nvidia, targeting AI developers as its primary audience. Huang reiterated this focus during his remarks.

While declining to elaborate on future plans for the CPU, Huang left room for speculation. “What else can I do with it? I’m gonna have to wait to tell you that. You know, obviously, we have plans,” he said.
