Microsoft appoints former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to spearhead AI research division By Elets News Network - 21 November 2023

Sam Altman

Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, and Greg Brockman, the Co-founder, were hired by Microsoft on Monday to head a new team dedicated to advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research.

Along with fellow OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and other former OpenAI staff members, Altman will be in charge of a “New Advanced AI research team” at Microsoft, according to Microsoft CEO and Chairman Satya Nadella.

After the board voiced doubts about Altman’s capacity to head OpenAI, he was abruptly removed on Friday. Altman rose to prominence as the face of AI with the publication of ChatGPT and GPT-4. Nadella made the latest announcement after talks over the weekend to perhaps bring Altman back to OpenAI.

“We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team,” stated Nadella. “We look forward to providing them with the necessary resources for their success.”

Altman quoted Nadella in a post on X to reaffirm his transfer to Microsoft, saying that “the mission continues.” In addition, Nadella hinted at Altman’s potential role there, saying that GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn are examples of how the firm is dedicated to enabling founders and innovators to create autonomous identities and cultures within Microsoft.

Shortly after his CEO reinstatement attempt with the OpenAI board failed, Altman was hired by Microsoft. Emmett Shear, a former CEO of Twitch and co-founder, has been named temporary CEO of OpenAI. Mira Murati, a CTO, was previously serving as interim CEO of OpenAI following Altman’s abrupt termination on Friday.

A week ago, Microsoft said that it was creating a dedicated AI processor to train massive language models, which might lessen the company’s dependency on Nvidia. This news coincides with the announcement of the company’s new advanced AI research team. Microsoft has also developed an Arm-based CPU specifically for cloud applications. Azure data centers are intended to be powered by these two unique silicon processors.

With a $1 billion first investment in 2019 and further sizable expenditures in 2021, Microsoft has made considerable investments in OpenAI. Altman was instrumental in persuading Nadella to allocate $10 billion to OpenAI, which caused the company’s valuation to soar from $29 billion to over $80 billion. According to reports, Microsoft has now invested a total of $13 billion in OpenAI.
