Dunzo’s Co-Founder Kabeer Biswas Takes Charge of Flipkart’s Quick Commerce Venture By Elets News Network - 09 January 2025

Flipkart has hired Kabeer Biswas, the co-founder of Dunzo, to lead its quick-commerce business in India. Flipkart, owned by Walmart, is working to grow its quick-delivery service called Flipkart Minutes.

Biswas will manage Flipkart Minutes, according to sources, which focuses on fast deliveries. This step comes after Flipkart considered buying Dunzo last year. The deal did not happen because of issues with Dunzo’s ownership. Reliance Retail, a major investor in Dunzo, has since stopped actively supporting the startup.

Quick commerce, which delivers goods in 10 to 15 minutes, has not succeeded in many global markets but is growing in India. Companies such as Swiggy and Nykaa are changing their supply chains to meet the demand for faster deliveries.

In India, the quick-commerce market is led by Zomato’s BlinkIt, Swiggy’s Instamart, and Zepto. Flipkart entered the market with Minutes last year, and Amazon recently started testing its own quick-commerce service.

Flipkart is using quick commerce to reach urban consumers, where Amazon has been stronger. Flipkart has set up over 100 dark stores—small warehouses near residential areas—and is offering high-value items like laptops and smartphones through its quick-delivery app, according to a report by Jefferies.

Dunzo, started in 2014, was one of the first companies in India to focus on quick commerce. It had plans to deliver groceries, household goods, and more in under 30 minutes. Supported by investors like Google, Blume Ventures, and Lightbox, Dunzo raised over $500 million. However, it faced challenges as competition increased. Biswas has also been working on new ideas with former colleagues and has pitched some to venture capital firms, including Peak XV, said people familiar with the matter.
