Blackstone, the world’s largest alternative asset manager, has opened a global capability centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, its first outside the United States. The firm announced the centre on Tuesday, 27 October, as its second office in India alongside its Mumbai headquarters.
The opening comes with a bigger India commitment. According to The Times of India, Blackstone aims to double its investments in India to $100 billion over the next five years, from about $51 billion invested so far.
What the Bengaluru centre will do
Blackstone said the GCC will bring together its own employees and professional services partnerships across corporate functions to strengthen the firm’s operations in India and globally. Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer Michael Chae told The Times of India that the team will support finance, technology, human resources, legal and compliance work, and will be closely integrated with Blackstone’s global operations rather than run as a standalone unit.
- Leadership: Susan Yung, Senior Managing Director in the Blackstone Credit & Insurance (BXCI) Investment Operations team, will oversee the centre. She has more than 25 years of experience in finance and previously lived in Bengaluru while working at Goldman Sachs.
- Headcount: Bengaluru has about 80 employees today, out of roughly 170 in India, and is expected to reach 100 or more by the end of the year.
- Technology: Blackstone has hired senior leaders across key functions, including an engineering team that will work with the firm’s global chief technology officer.
- Location: Prestige Lakeshore Drive in Bellandur, an office park jointly owned by Blackstone Real Estate and Prestige Group.
Blackstone’s investment professionals will remain in Mumbai.
“We are proud to deepen our presence in India with a new office in Bengaluru, reflecting our conviction in one of our most important markets globally. By investing in exceptional talent, technology-enabled capabilities, and a world-class workplace, we are strengthening our ability to support the firm’s operations globally,” Chae said in the company’s announcement.
Karnataka welcomes the move
Karnataka’s Department of Electronics, IT and BT welcomed the launch on LinkedIn, calling it a major milestone that strengthens the state’s position as a premier global hub for GCC operations. The department credited the state’s professional talent and said the move would drive economic momentum, starting with a growing local workforce.
A measured view on AI and jobs
The expansion follows rapid growth at the firm, whose assets under management have roughly quadrupled over the past decade to nearly $1.4 trillion. Speaking to The Times of India, Chae said it was too early to conclude that AI would lead to widespread job losses. “We don’t see AI as some existential negative for IT services companies. Like most businesses, there’s an opportunity to get ahead of the risk of disruption and enable their own tools and services,” he said. He cited Blackstone portfolio company Mphasis as an example of a firm using AI to strengthen its business, and added that many companies would keep relying on IT services partners rather than build all their AI capabilities in-house.
Why it matters for CIOs
Global financial firms have long used Bengaluru for technology and operations. A first non-US capability centre from an investor of Blackstone’s scale, built around finance, technology and compliance functions with engineering leaders tied to the global CTO, suggests a different role for India: a place where core enterprise capabilities are built and run, not only supported. For technology leaders, it adds to the competition for senior engineering, data and risk talent in the city, and confirms that GCCs are being set up as integrated parts of global operations from day one.
