Larsen & Toubro is adding serious muscle to India’s AI compute map. Vyoma.AI, the group’s integrated AI cloud and hyperscale data centre business, held the groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Pujan) on 28 October for a new 52 MW AI-ready green data centre in Chennai.
The facility sits within L&T’s planned gigawatt-scale AI Factory campus at Kancheepuram near Chennai. The campus already runs advanced AI compute clusters in an operational 30 MW data centre and has 150 MVA of power infrastructure ready, giving the new build a head start on the single biggest constraint facing AI data centres today: power.
Built for high-density AI workloads
Vyoma.AI says the 52 MW building is being designed from the ground up for dense GPU racks. It will use direct-to-chip liquid cooling to handle the heat generated by modern accelerators, and will combine renewable energy with energy-efficient systems to keep its carbon footprint in check. The target customers are hyperscalers, neocloud providers and AI companies that need large blocks of capacity for training, fine-tuning and inference.
“The groundbreaking of our 52 MW Chennai data center marks a significant step in strengthening India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. As AI adoption accelerates, the data center is being designed to deliver the performance, scalability and resilience required for next-generation workloads while advancing sustainable, low-carbon digital infrastructure,” said Prashant Chiranjive Jain, Managing Director, Vyoma.AI.
Part of a larger AI Factory push
The groundbreaking builds on a run of AI infrastructure moves by L&T this year. In August, LTN Compute, the AI infrastructure subsidiary under Vyoma.AI, won what L&T classifies as a mega order (₹10,000–15,000 crore) to build an AI Factory for US-based AI cloud company Together AI, deploying 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs at the same Chennai campus. On the company’s Q2 FY27 earnings call on 27 October, L&T set January 2027 as the commissioning target for that AI Factory and said it aims to cross 100 MW of AI data centre capacity over the next 18 to 24 months.
Earlier in the year, L&T also announced a proposed venture with NVIDIA under the IndiaAI Mission to develop gigawatt-scale AI Factory infrastructure so that AI models and workloads can be built and run within India.
Why it matters
Vyoma.AI is targeting more than 250 MW of data centre capacity across India, spanning sovereign cloud platforms, GPU-as-a-Service, hyperscale colocation and mission-critical digital infrastructure. With global AI firms increasingly looking to India for compute as power constraints bite elsewhere, and Indian model builders pushing for capacity that keeps sensitive data inside national borders, liquid-cooled, power-ready campuses like Chennai are fast becoming strategic national assets rather than just real estate.
