Visa and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership to bring agentic commerce into the mainstream, enabling AI agents to initiate and complete real-world transactions on behalf of consumers within secure, user-defined limits.
As part of the collaboration, Visa will integrate its global payments infrastructure—including tokenisation, fraud monitoring, authentication, and transaction authorisation capabilities—directly into OpenAI experiences such as ChatGPT and Codex. The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of AI-powered commerce by allowing users to delegate certain purchasing and payment activities to trusted AI agents.
Under the framework, consumers will remain in control through customizable guardrails, including spending limits, approval requirements, and transaction thresholds. This ensures that AI agents can act autonomously while operating within parameters defined by the user.
Commenting on the partnership, Jack Forestell, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Visa, said AI has the potential to transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology. He emphasized that Visa’s focus is on ensuring AI-driven transactions remain trusted, secure, and seamless.

Visa currently processes more than 300 billion transactions annually through its global payment network. By extending this infrastructure into AI-native environments, the company aims to support the next generation of digital commerce powered by intelligent agents.
The partnership highlights the growing convergence of artificial intelligence and financial technology, paving the way for AI assistants that can not only provide recommendations but also securely execute transactions on behalf of users.
