India’s semiconductor sector has achieved a major milestone as Thiruvananthapuram-based fabless startup Netrasemi successfully completed the silicon bring-up of the NETRA A2000, the country’s first flagship Edge AI System-on-Chip (SoC) built on a 12nm process node.

Silicon bring-up is a critical stage in chip development that validates whether the fabricated chip functions as intended. The successful completion of this phase clears the way for further testing and eventual commercial production.

Manufactured using TSMC’s 12nm technology, the NETRA A2000 is designed for edge AI applications that process data directly on devices, enabling real-time intelligence with low power consumption. The chip can run object-detection models at under five watts, making it suitable for drones, smart cameras, robotics, and automotive applications.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the achievement as a positive outcome of India’s Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme. Netrasemi, one of the first companies selected under the scheme in 2023, has raised around ₹125 crore from Zoho and Unicorn India Ventures to support its growth.

The company has already begun customer trials with OEMs in the surveillance and automotive sectors, with commercial production targeted for mid-2027. The milestone highlights India’s growing capabilities in semiconductor design and strengthens the country’s ambitions in AI-driven hardware innovation.
