Google has officially launched a native Gemini AI application for Mac users, expanding its flagship assistant beyond web and mobile platforms and intensifying competition in the desktop AI space. The move brings Gemini directly to macOS users, where rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic already offer dedicated desktop apps.
The new Gemini app is designed as a fully native macOS experience and supports devices running macOS Sequoia 15 or later. Google said the application was built in Swift, enabling faster performance and deeper integration with Apple’s operating system compared to browser-based access.

A key feature of the rollout is instant access through keyboard shortcuts. Users can launch a floating Gemini chat window using Option + Space, while a larger full-screen interface can be opened with Option + Shift + Space. The app can also be pinned to the Dock or accessed through the Menu Bar for quicker workflow integration.

Beyond text conversations, the Mac app allows users to upload files, review documents, generate images and videos, and share on-screen windows with Gemini for contextual assistance. This positions the assistant as a productivity tool for research, writing, creative work, and day-to-day multitasking
