OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.4-Cyber, a specialised version of its flagship GPT-5.4 model built for defensive cybersecurity operations, signaling a direct response to Anthropic’s recently announced Mythos model. The launch highlights intensifying competition among AI leaders to dominate the fast-growing cybersecurity segment.
GPT-5.4-Cyber is designed to support legitimate cyber defence use cases such as vulnerability research, malware analysis, reverse engineering, and threat detection. OpenAI said the model lowers refusal thresholds for authorised cybersecurity tasks while maintaining safeguards against misuse.

Initially, access to the model will be restricted to vetted security vendors, researchers, and organisations through OpenAI’s Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) programme. The company is also expanding TAC to thousands of verified individual defenders and hundreds of security teams protecting critical software systems.

The release comes just days after Anthropic introduced Mythos under its controlled “Project Glasswing” initiative. Anthropic claimed Mythos had already identified thousands of vulnerabilities across major operating systems, browsers, and enterprise software platforms.
