Leading AI companies OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have begun collaborating to counter the growing threat of AI model distillation by Chinese startups, marking a rare alliance among industry rivals.
The companies are working together through the Frontier Model Forum, an industry body established in 2023, to share threat intelligence and detect unauthorised attempts to replicate their models.

Model distillation is a widely used AI technique where a smaller model is trained using outputs from a larger, more advanced system. However, concerns have emerged around “adversarial distillation,” where firms allegedly extract proprietary model behaviour without authorisation, effectively cloning advanced AI capabilities at a fraction of the cost.
The collaboration comes amid rising allegations from U.S. AI firms that certain Chinese companies have used such methods at scale. Earlier reports suggested that some firms generated millions of interactions using thousands of accounts to train competing models, raising concerns around intellectual property, safety, and national security.

By coordinating efforts, the companies aim to identify suspicious usage patterns, block misuse, and safeguard their frontier AI systems. While they remain competitors in the market, the shared risk of model replication has prompted a unified response.
The development also reflects broader geopolitical tensions in AI, as governments increasingly view control over advanced AI systems as a strategic priority. Industry experts note that unchecked distillation could not only impact revenues but also lead to the proliferation of AI models without safety guardrails.
This partnership signals a shift in the AI landscape, where collaboration on security and governance is emerging alongside competition in innovation, especially as the race for global AI leadership intensifies.
