Anthropic Releases Claude Opus 4.6 with Improved Long-Context By Elets News Network - 06 February 2026

Claude Opus 4.6

AI company Anthropic has announced significant performance improvements in Claude Opus 4.6, addressing a long-standing challenge in large language models known as “context rot”—the drop in accuracy as conversations or documents grow longer.

According to Anthropic, Claude Opus 4.6 performs markedly better than earlier versions when handling extremely long inputs. On the 8-needle, 1-million-token variant of the MRCR v2 benchmark, a test designed to evaluate how well a model can retrieve specific information buried deep within vast amounts of text, Opus 4.6 achieved a 76% score. In comparison, Claude Sonnet 4.5 scored 18.5% on the same benchmark.

The “needle-in-a-haystack” test is widely used to assess whether AI models can maintain attention and recall across long contexts, a capability that is increasingly important for tasks such as legal analysis, research, code review, and large-scale document processing.

Anthropic said the results indicate a substantial improvement in the model’s ability to track, retain, and retrieve relevant details even as the size of the input grows to hundreds of thousands or millions of tokens.

Availability and Pricing

Claude Opus 4.6 is now available through claude.ai, the Claude API, and across major cloud platforms. Developers can access the model using the identifier claude-opus-4-6 via the API.

Anthropic confirmed that pricing remains unchanged, with subscriptions starting at $5, making the upgraded model available without additional cost to existing users.

The release positions Claude Opus 4.6 as a strong option for developers and enterprises that rely on long-context reasoning, an area where performance differences between models can significantly impact real-world applications.
