OpenAI introduces powerful new features in ChatGPT 5 By Kaanchi Chawla - 13 August 2025

ChatGPT 5

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has launched a major upgrade to ChatGPT, introducing a host of new GPT-5 features aimed at giving users greater control and flexibility. Announced via X, the update now allows users to choose between three distinct response modes — Auto, Fast, and Thinking, to better match their preferences for speed or depth. While most will default to Auto mode, the Fast option prioritises quicker responses, and Thinking delivers more in-depth, reasoned answers.

For GPT-5’s “Thinking” mode, OpenAI has set a weekly cap of 3,000 messages, with additional capacity available via GPT-5 Thinking Mini. The model now supports a 196k-token context limit, enabling it to handle significantly longer conversations, documents, and research projects. Altman hinted these limits could evolve based on user adoption trends.

In another change, GPT-4o is back in the model picker for all paid subscribers, with assurances it won’t be deprecated without ample warning. Users can now enable a “Show additional models” toggle in ChatGPT’s web settings to unlock options such as o3, 4.1, and GPT-5 Thinking Mini. However, GPT-4.5 remains exclusive to Pro subscribers due to its high GPU demand.

OpenAI is also working to fine-tune GPT-5’s personality, aiming for a “warmer” tone than the current version while avoiding the overly casual style some users disliked in GPT-4o.

This update comes just a week after OpenAI touted GPT-5 as its most capable model yet — excelling in complex reasoning, advanced coding, and creative writing. During a livestream launch event, Altman called GPT-5 a “major upgrade” that, for the first time, truly feels like “talking to an expert in any subject.”
