The Government of India has announced that the AI Impact Summit will be held in February 2026, reaffirming the country’s growing leadership in the responsible development and application of artificial intelligence (AI). The summit will provide a high-level platform to explore AI’s transformative role across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, climate, and governance, with an emphasis on accessibility and ethical innovation.
In alignment with the vision of inclusive technological growth, India is advancing a broad-based IndiaAI Mission that emphasises democratisation of AI. The mission is focused on delivering AI tools and infrastructure for real-world problem-solving, while ensuring that safety, accountability, and the protection of individual rights remain central to its deployment.

One of the mission’s key priorities is the development of indigenous foundational AI models, including large and small language models trained on Indian datasets. These models aim to reflect India’s diverse cultural, linguistic, and regional nuances, improving the relevance and accuracy of AI-driven solutions. The targeted sectors for deployment include public health, agriculture advisory, climate risk management, digital education, and citizen services.

To accelerate innovation, India is also expanding its national AI infrastructure. Through a dedicated compute portal, over 34,000 high-performance GPUs have been provisioned for use by researchers, startups, academia, and public institutions. These computing resources are being offered at subsidised rates to lower the barrier for AI experimentation and research.

In parallel, the IndiaAI Datasets Platform has been launched to provide curated, high-quality datasets and pre-trained AI models. This platform enables developers to build AI applications with access to domain-specific data while ensuring data privacy and security. The datasets span a wide range of areas, including clinical diagnostics, agricultural monitoring, and linguistic tools.
The government is also actively supporting the development of AI-powered applications that address societal needs. More than 30 projects are currently being funded under themes such as early disease detection, assistive learning tools, climate resilience, flood mapping, and enhanced public grievance redressal mechanisms. These projects are being led by startups, academic institutions, and public-private partnerships.
Recognising the importance of global collaboration, India has launched an international expansion program to support AI startups. Selected startups are being trained to scale their solutions globally, particularly in areas such as AI for cybersecurity, privacy, and voice technologies.
A cornerstone of India’s approach is the adoption of a techno-legal framework to regulate AI usage. This combines legal safeguards with technical innovations for mitigating risks like misinformation, bias, and deepfakes. The government is also funding research at premier institutions to develop tools for deepfake detection, privacy protection, and algorithmic fairness.
India is committed to building safe, inclusive, and trustworthy AI. The upcoming AI Impact Summit will highlight these efforts and showcase how AI can serve as a powerful enabler of national progress, economic growth, and digital empowerment.
