Character.AI, the rapidly growing AI chatbot platform resonating strongly with Gen Z audiences, has named Karandeep Anand as its new Chief Executive Officer. Anand, formerly the Vice President of Business Products at Meta and a long-time advisor to the company’s board, steps into the role at a pivotal juncture.

His appointment comes in the wake of co-founder Noam Shazeer’s unexpected move to Google—an exit that has drawn federal scrutiny due to Google’s investment connections with Character.AI. The leadership change marks a significant moment in the platform’s evolution as it navigates both rising popularity and increasing regulatory attention.

Known for its uniquely engaging and personalized AI chatbot experiences, Character.AI currently boasts tens of millions of monthly users. A striking 66% of them fall within the 18–24 age bracket, and 72% identify as women, highlighting its cultural impact, especially among younger audiences.

However, the platform hasn’t been without controversy. It has faced criticism over inadequate moderation and is currently entangled in a lawsuit tied to the tragic death of a teenage user—raising questions around platform responsibility and safety.

In his first major statement, Anand laid out an ambitious roadmap for the next 60 days. His promises include better memory functionality, upgraded model performance, clearer content guidelines, and improved discovery tools for user-created characters. He also hinted at upcoming immersive multimedia features designed to make the experience “more fun and engaging.”

“Our goal is to turn Character.AI into a new frontier for entertainment and digital interaction,” Anand shared, signaling a fresh vision for the company’s trajectory as AI tools increasingly become emotional companions and digital mainstays.

With Anand at the helm, Character.AI aims to not only regain trust but also redefine what social and interactive AI can be in the years ahead.
