Anthropic is stepping up its AI game by introducing web search capabilities to its Claude chatbot, a feature now in preview for paid users in the U.S. The company has confirmed that free users and additional regions will gain access soon. This move aligns Claude with competitors like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Mistral’s Le Chat, and xAI’s Grok, which already offer real-time internet searches.

The web search function, accessible through the Claude web app’s settings, allows the AI to pull in up-to-date information when necessary. However, it is currently available only for Anthropic’s latest model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet.

Beyond search, Anthropic is also working on voice-enabled interactions, aiming to make AI communication more natural and intuitive. Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger stated that the company has already developed prototypes, emphasizing that speaking to AI could become a primary interface for interacting with digital assistants in the future.

Despite the advancements, integrating AI with web search remains a complex challenge. Unlike traditional search engines that retrieve direct results, language models generate responses probabilistically, which can sometimes lead to inconsistencies or factual inaccuracies.

Anthropic highlights several key use cases for Claude’s new capabilities, including helping sales teams stay updated on market trends, assisting analysts in sourcing data, supporting researchers in identifying gaps, and enabling consumers to compare products efficiently.

This latest update comes shortly after Anthropic secured a $3.5 billion Series E funding round, pushing its valuation to $61.5 billion. The company’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model has also received widespread recognition, particularly for its advanced performance in AI-driven coding tasks.
