AI adoption in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday to discuss India’s plans for artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and digital transformation. The meeting also confirmed Microsoft’s plans to expand its involvement in India, especially in improving AI-based solutions aimed at driving future growth.

After the meeting, Nadella shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), thanking Modi for the discussion and emphasising Microsoft’s commitment to making India an AI-first nation. Modi responded, acknowledging Microsoft’s plans and the productive exchange of ideas on technology and AI.

This meeting is part of India’s efforts to establish itself as a global leader in AI and innovation. It reflects Microsoft’s strategy to expand in India, with AI solutions playing a significant role in transforming industries and benefiting various sectors. Modi’s interactions with global technology leaders, including former Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka and Perplexity co-founder Aravind Srinivas, underline the government’s focus on strengthening India’s AI ecosystem.

The government is also working to nurture AI startups. The Union Cabinet approved the IndiaAI Mission in 2024, allocating ₹10,372 crore to support startups, fund innovation, and develop AI infrastructure. Reports estimate that India’s generative AI market could grow into a $17 billion opportunity by 2030.

Nadella is in India for Microsoft’s AI tour, which begins in Bengaluru with a CEO conclave and keynote address. Microsoft recently announced plans to invest $80 billion globally in FY25 for AI-enabled data centres and AI model training, with over half of this investment in the US. Last week, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Nadella in Hyderabad to discuss similar themes of AI and digital growth.

In recent years, Modi has engaged with several leaders in AI, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other global AI innovators, to explore opportunities and establish frameworks for ethical AI use and data privacy standards.
