Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has named Joel Kaplan as its new Chief Global Affairs Officer. Kaplan, who has been with Meta since 2011, previously held the position of Global Policy Head. He has previously worked as the Vice President of US Public Policy at Facebook and was also the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy at the White House during the Presidency of George W. Bush between 2006 to 2009.
Kevin Martin, the current Head of US Public Policy at Meta, will step into Kaplan’s former role.

Kaplan is taking charge from Nick Clegg, a former British Deputy Prime Minister, who decided to step down. Joining Meta in 2018, Clegg played a key role in developing policies related to content and elections.

In a post on LinkedIn, Clegg shared his decision to step down, and said, “My time at the company coincided with a significant resetting of the relationship between “big tech” and the societal pressures manifested in new laws, institutions and norms affecting the sector. I hope I have played some role in seeking to bridge the very different worlds of tech and politics – worlds that will continue to interact in unpredictable ways across the globe.” He also expressed confidence in Kaplan, calling him the right person for the right job at the right time.
