Tamil Nadu Government and Google Join Hands to Launch AI Lab in Chennai By Elets News Network - 01 September 2024

The Tamil Nadu government has signed an agreement with Google to establish AI labs at Guidance, the state’s investment promotion agency. Guidance aims to train 2 million young people in artificial intelligence, according to Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa.

The partnership was formalised during Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s visit to Google’s headquarters in the United States, along with that of Apple and Microsoft.


Stalin posted on X, “An awe-inspiring visit to the offices of Apple, Google and Microsoft. Discussed various opportunities and exciting partnerships. Determined to strengthen these partnerships and make Tamil Nadu one of the foremost growth engines of Asia!”

Minister Rajaa informed that Tamil Nadu is stepping into a new era of technology, including research and development in semiconductors and AI. The AI lab, named “Tamil Nadu AI Labs,” will be set up in Chennai in collaboration with Google.

CM Stalin also met with executives at Apple and Microsoft during his US visit. He explored new opportunities and partnerships and expressed his commitment to strengthening these relationships to make Tamil Nadu a leading growth hub in Asia.

The Tamil Nadu government also signed several agreements with major companies like Nokia, PayPal, Microchip, and Yield Engineering Systems. These deals were signed by Guidance Tamil Nadu and are expected to bring significant investments to the state:

  • Nokia will establish a new R&D centre in Tamil Nadu, investing ₹450 crores and creating 100 jobs.

  • PayPal will set up an Advanced Development Centre in Chennai, creating 1,000 jobs.

  • Microchip will open a new R&D centre for semiconductor technology in Chennai, investing ₹250 crore and creating 1,500 jobs.

  • Yield Engineering Systems (YES) will develop a product manufacturing facility for semiconductor equipment in Coimbatore, investing ₹150 crore and generating 300 jobs.
