The founder of Character.AI and a long-time Google researcher, Noam Shazeer, has been appointed by Google to its main AI project, Gemini, as the technical lead. According to an internal memo, Shazeer will serve alongside Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals.

Gemini was developed by Google’s AI division, DeepMind. It is currently being integrated into products like Search and Pixel smartphones.

Shazeer recently returned to Google after founding Character.AI in 2021. Google is said to have paid billions to bring him and a handful of other employees back to DeepMind and secured a licensing agreement with Character.AI. He joined Google in 2000 and co-authored a 2017 research paper that spurred the current AI boom.

Character.AI, which has raised $193 million and was valued at $1 billion, uses advancements from that research. Though Google considered investing in Character.AI, they chose instead to bring Shazeer back into the fold.
