Viber introduces AI-powered summaries for group chats By Elets News Network - 16 April 2024

Viber has rolled out an innovative feature that leverages AI technology from OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, to provide summaries of unread messages in group chats. This new functionality aims to enhance user convenience by presenting the key points of discussions in bullet form, allowing users to catch up quickly without sifting through extensive chat histories.

To activate this feature, Viber users simply need to enter a group chat with unread messages and agree to the prompt for a summary. The AI-generated summaries are designed to respect privacy by omitting personally identifiable information, excluding usernames, and ensuring that specific messages are not directly linked to individuals within the group.

This feature is a significant time-saver for those looking to stay informed without the burden of reading long conversations. Rakuten Viber ensures that these summaries are not saved on their servers and are only accessible to users who request them. Initially available for group chats, there is potential for expanding this service to individual chats.

The feature is currently being deployed on Android and iOS platforms in the US, Ukraine, Japan, Bulgaria, Poland, and the Philippines, supporting 50 languages. There remains uncertainty about when the feature will be introduced to Indian users. Like WhatsApp, Viber maintains end-to-end encryption to safeguard the privacy of conversations.
