Google to revamp Gemini AI amid bias concerns, CEO Sundar Pichai announces improvements By Elets News Network - 29 February 2024

CEO Sundar Pichai

Google’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai has communicated to the workforce the company’s commitment to remedying issues identified with its Gemini AI tool, following the emergence of “biased” and “completely unacceptable” text and image responses. The revelation comes after the temporary suspension of the tool’s feature for generating human images, prompted by inaccuracies in historical portrayals.

Sundar Pichai assured staff that rigorous efforts are underway to correct the biases and offensive outputs previously generated by Gemini AI. The concerted effort by Google’s teams has reportedly led to significant enhancements across numerous prompts. A comprehensive review is planned to prevent the recurrence of such issues, aiming for a refined relaunch of Gemini AI in the forthcoming weeks.

This initiative is part of Google’s broader strategy to compete in the burgeoning AI landscape, intensified by the success of Microsoft-supported OpenAI’s ChatGPT since November 2022. Google, under its parent company Alphabet, had introduced its generative AI chatbot Bard, which was rebranded to Gemini alongside the introduction of subscription models for advanced AI interactions earlier this month.

Additionally, a noteworthy partnership has been forged between Google and social media giant Reddit, entailing a $60 million annual contract for utilizing Reddit’s content in training Google’s AI models. This collaboration highlights Reddit’s revenue diversification efforts ahead of its anticipated public offering, amidst the competitive digital advertising arena dominated by platforms such as TikTok and Facebook.
