WhatsApp to Replace ‘Communities’ Tab with ‘AIs’ By Elets News Network - 14 January 2025

WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta and used by over 2 billion people globally, is working on a new feature that could let users design AI-powered characters. This development, spotted in WhatsApp v2.25.1.26 beta for Android, might replace the existing ‘Communities’ tab with a new ‘AIs’ tab, according to a report by WABetaInfo.

The feature appears to be inspired by the Meta AI Studio tool available for Instagram, which allows users to create custom AI chatbots. On WhatsApp, users could soon personalise these chatbots with unique traits, tailoring them to specific needs or preferences. For instance, a chatbot could assist with productivity tasks, offer personalised advice, motivate users during workouts, or share news updates.

AI chatbots have already been introduced on WhatsApp, but the ability to create customised ones adds a new layer of functionality. Each chatbot would likely have distinctive traits, making it different from others created by users. This could make the feature particularly appealing to individuals looking for personalised digital assistance.

Regarding the ‘Communities’ tab, WhatsApp seems to be shifting its location to the main Chats tab. This adjustment aims to keep the interface cohesive while introducing the new ‘AIs’ tab. However, as the feature is still under development, there is no confirmed launch date. Users will need to wait before they can start crafting their personalised AI characters within the app.
