ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India (STT GDC India) has announced the launch of a next-generation, AI-ready data centre campus in New Town, Kolkata. Backed by an investment of ₹450 crore, this state-of-the-art facility marks a strategic step in bolstering the digital infrastructure in eastern India, particularly for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) demands.

Spread over 5.59 acres in Kolkata’s Silicon Valley area, the facility is engineered with high-density rack capabilities, modular scalability, and advanced cooling systems tailored to support AI workloads, large language models, and other HPC applications. The design also features flexibility to integrate emerging technologies like liquid cooling.

With an initial IT power capacity of 10 MW—5 to 6 MW in the first phase—the data centre can scale up to 25 MW of total IT load. The power architecture includes N+2C redundancy and a radial N+N configuration for power incomers, ensuring seamless availability and resilience. The facility has also secured the TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification, reinforcing its robust infrastructure and fault-tolerant architecture.

Bimal Khandelwal, CEO of STT GDC India, emphasised the facility’s role in India’s digital future:

“Our Kolkata campus is built to power the rapidly growing AI landscape—from local language AI models being crafted by startups to enterprise-scale deployments of advanced AI. Its low-latency connectivity and high computing efficiency are designed to accelerate AI-led transformation across industries.”

In addition to performance, sustainability remains a core design pillar. The data centre will operate with low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), integrate water-saving technologies, and use low-GWP refrigerants to minimise environmental impact. The facility also ensures there are zero Single Points of Failure (SPOF), aligning with global reliability benchmarks.

Scheduled to become operational by Q2 2025, the Kolkata campus will bring STT GDC India’s footprint to 30 data centres across 10 cities, offering a combined IT load capacity of 390 MW. Its presence in New Town further strengthens the area’s emergence as an innovation and data-driven hub for enterprises, hyperscalers, and government agencies alike.
