In a move aimed at enhancing digital accessibility across India, Snapdeal, an e-commerce giant has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhashini, the government’s AI-powered language translation platform. This collaboration seeks to address the diverse linguistic landscape of the country by leveraging artificial intelligence and voice-first technology.

Bhashini, a platform launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2022, specializes in AI-powered language translation, offering an open data and open-source platform for startups to develop solutions for the government and beyond. With a repository supporting 22 languages for text-to-text translations and 12 for voice-to-text, Bhashini is poised to revolutionize digital communication across various linguistic demographics.

“This initiative aligns seamlessly with our mission to enhance accessibility and affordability in online shopping, particularly in Tier III cities and beyond,” stated Himanshu Chakrawarti, CEO of Snapdeal, emphasizing the partnership’s focus on widening digital inclusion.

Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting its potential to break down barriers and create a more connected and inclusive digital ecosystem for all Indians.

The partnership between Snapdeal and Bhashini comes on the heels of recent initiatives such as NPCI’s Hello! UPI, which enables conversational payments in Indian languages. With discussions underway with fintech firms like Paytm for testing their systems, Bhashini is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing linguistic inclusivity in digital transactions.
