OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, announced the development of a groundbreaking software named “Sora,” capable of creating videos up to a minute long from simple text descriptions. Currently, in a phase known as red teaming to identify potential flaws, Sora is also accessible to visual artists, designers, and filmmakers for feedback purposes.
The software stands out for its ability to craft intricate scenes involving numerous characters, a variety of motions, and precise background details. It also boasts the capability to generate multiple camera shots within a single video and can bring static images to life. This innovation follows the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which gained widespread attention for its text-based compositions, including emails, code, and poetry, upon its release in late 2022.

Meanwhile, Meta Platforms has upgraded its image model Emu to include video editing and generation from text, aiming to rival tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon in the generative AI field. Although Sora is still evolving, with challenges in accurately interpreting spatial prompts and camera movements, OpenAI is also working on tools to identify videos created by Sora, ensuring the technology’s responsible use.
