OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly considering the launch of a marketplace where developers could sell AI models built on OpenAI’s AI technology.
According to sources familiar with the company’s discussions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed these potential plans during a meeting with developers in London last month.
The marketplace would serve enterprise customers who have tailored ChatGPT to their specific requirements. These customized AI models have been used in a variety of applications, including detecting financial fraud from online transaction data and providing market insights based on internal documents.

The creators of these models could offer their solutions to other businesses through OpenAI’s proposed marketplace, potentially expanding OpenAI’s customer base.
OpenAI’s marketplace could compete with existing app stores run by some of the company’s customers and technology partners, such as Salesforce and Microsoft if it comes to fruition. OpenAI aims to make its technology more accessible and widely adopted by providing a platform for developers to distribute and monetise their AI models.

According to The Information, two of OpenAI’s customers, Aquant and Khan Academy, have expressed interest in putting their ChatGPT-powered AI models on the market. Aquant creates software that manufacturers use to guide customers through device maintenance and repairs, whereas Khan Academy is well-known for its educational app. Their participation would broaden the range of AI models available in the market.
ChatGPT has gained significant traction among businesses looking to automate tasks and improve efficiency since its launch in late 2021. Its advanced large language models have attracted businesses interested in leveraging AI software for a variety of applications.
