Microsoft has unveiled a substantial $1.5 billion investment in G42, a United Arab Emirates-based artificial intelligence company. This investment secures Microsoft a minority stake and a board position at G42.

As part of the deal, G42 will leverage Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform to operate its AI applications and services, aiming to provide sophisticated AI solutions to global public sectors and major corporations.

Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, who will assume a board role at G42, emphasized the partnership’s commitment to merging top-tier technology with the highest standards for safe and responsible AI. This collaboration will be closely managed in partnership with both the UAE and U.S. governments.

The initiative also plans to expand AI and digital infrastructure across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, aligning with broader geopolitical efforts to manage technological exchanges with certain nations.

In addition to the technology partnership, Microsoft and G42 will also help establish a $1 billion fund to enhance AI capabilities in the UAE and the broader region. This comes as G42 reduces its technological dependencies on China, moving away from Chinese hardware and discontinuing the use of Huawei telecom equipment amid security concerns.

This partnership represents a significant step in fostering global tech collaboration, enhancing AI capabilities while adhering to rigorous security and ethical standards.
