Microsoft has highlighted Google’s advantageous position in the generative artificial intelligence (AI) sector to European Union antitrust officials, emphasizing the advantages Google holds due to its extensive data collection and specialized AI chips. This insight came as part of Microsoft’s feedback to a European Commission inquiry initiated in January, which aimed to assess the competitive dynamics within the generative AI field. The inquiry responds to the surge in popularity of generative AI technologies, like those powering Microsoft-supported OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s own Gemini chatbot, amidst growing concerns around their potential to spread misinformation.
In its communication with the European Commission, Microsoft underlined Google’s unique position as the only company with a comprehensive vertical integration that spans from proprietary AI chips to a robust mobile app ecosystem. This integration, Microsoft argues, grants Google a considerable edge and autonomy across all layers of AI development, contrasting with other companies that must form alliances to foster innovation and maintain competitiveness.
