Matt Garman takes charge as AWS’ New CEO By Elets News Network - 04 June 2024

Matt Garman

Matt Garman officially took over as CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday. With nearly two decades of experience at AWS, Garman is poised to drive the $100 billion cloud giant forward. He will succeed former CEO, Adam Selipsky, who stepped down from the company on June 3 after 15 years of service.

In his first move as CEO, Garman has initiated several significant leadership changes and organizational restructures designed to streamline operations and enhance AWS’s growth trajectory. “I am more optimistic than I have ever been for the potential and growth ahead of us and believe these changes will best position us for long-term success,” Garman stated in a message to employees.

AWS’s global sales organisations will be unified under Greg Pearson, Vice President of AWS Global Sales. This consolidation includes bringing together AWS Global Sales, the Worldwide Public Sector, the Greater China Region, and Sales Strategy and Operations. Dave Levy (VP of Worldwide Public Sector), Robert Chu (President of AWS in Greater China), and Peter Cray (VP of Strategy and Operations for AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services), along with their teams, will now report directly to Pearson.

The Generative AI (GenAI) Pursuits Business, led by Scott Rosecrans, will be integrated into the AWS Industries Organization under Kathrin Renz. This move aims to leverage industry-specific solutions to serve AWS customers better.

Uwem Ukpong, VP of Global Services, will expand his responsibilities to include AWS’s Sovereign Cloud team, led by Max Peterson, and the International Product Management teams, led by Ryan Mackle.

Garman’s previous role as Senior Vice President of AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services will not be filled. Garman explained, “We have a very strong leadership team in SMGS, and I am not directly replacing my current role, which will help us continue to move faster by being closer to the customer.”

Garman expressed his gratitude to these leaders for their commitment to advancing AWS’s mission, emphasising the importance of agility and collaboration in serving customers effectively.

With these strategic changes, Garman aims to position AWS for continued innovation and leadership in the cloud computing industry.
