Gemma 4

Google has unveiled Gemma 4, its most capable open AI model family to date, following strong developer adoption with over 400 million downloads since the first generation launched.

The new model family is available in four sizes, with the 31B model ranking among the top open models globally, currently placed third on the Arena AI leaderboard. The 26B model also ranks in the top tier, outperforming models significantly larger in size.

Designed for advanced reasoning and agentic workflows, Gemma 4 introduces native multimodal capabilities, allowing all models to process text, images, and video. The models support over 140 languages and feature context windows ranging from 128K tokens for edge models to 256K tokens for larger variants.

Google has also introduced E2B and E4B lightweight models, optimised for on-device deployment, enabling offline use on smartphones, Raspberry Pi, and other edge hardware. These models were developed in collaboration with the Google Pixel team and chipset partners such as Qualcomm Technologies and MediaTek.

The full Gemma 4 suite is available across platforms including Hugging Face, Kaggle, and Ollama, with built-in support for developer tools like vLLM, LM Studio, and NVIDIA NIM from launch.

In a move widely appreciated by developers, Gemma 4 has been released under a commercially permissive Apache 2.0 licence, offering flexibility and full control over deployment, data, and infrastructure.

Alongside the launch, Google announced the Gemma 4 Good Challenge on Kaggle, encouraging developers to build AI-powered solutions that deliver real-world social impact.

With Gemma 4, Google is strengthening its position in the open AI ecosystem, focusing on performance, accessibility, and real-world usability across devices and industries.
