Elon Musk Unveils xAI, an AI Startup Challenging Major Tech Firms with Truth-Seeking AI By Elets News Network - 13 July 2023

Elon Musk

Elon Musk has officially launched his highly anticipated artificial intelligence startup, xAI, on Wednesday. With a mission to develop an alternative to ChatGPT and compete with established technology companies, Musk aims to revolutionize the AI industry.

As the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of Twitter, Musk has been vocal about the need to regulate AI development due to potential risks. During a recent Twitter Spaces event, he outlined his vision for a safer AI, introducing xAI’s unique approach. Instead of explicitly programming morality, xAI aims to create a “maximally curious” AI that seeks to understand the fundamental truths of the universe. Musk believes that fostering curiosity will enhance AI safety and align its goals with those of humanity, which he finds inherently captivating.

Having co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left its board in 2018, Musk has assembled a team of talented engineers for xAI. The roster includes notable members such as Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer from Google’s DeepMind; Tony Wu, a former Google employee; Christian Szegedy, a research scientist at Google; and Greg Yang, formerly of Microsoft.

To provide further insights into their vision and approach, the xAI team plans to host a Twitter Spaces event on July 14. The company is actively seeking experienced engineers and researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area, underscoring its commitment to tapping into the region’s rich talent pool.

Although xAI is a separate venture from Musk’s X Corp, it is expected to collaborate closely with other companies under his leadership, including Twitter and Tesla. While Microsoft has invested in OpenAI, Musk’s xAI aims to disrupt the AI landscape and challenge established players in the industry.

At the core of xAI’s ambitions is the development of a “truth-seeking” AI called TruthGPT, which will rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI. These existing models also strive to comprehend the nature of the universe, making the competition in the AI space more intense.

In its quest for AI safety, xAI has sought the guidance of Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety, who will serve as an advisor. Hendrycks specializes in addressing the risks associated with AI, further emphasizing xAI’s commitment to responsible and secure artificial intelligence development.
