Bharti Global Secures 24.5% Stake in British Telecom, Plans to Boost AI and 5G R&D By Elets News Network - 13 August 2024

The international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, Bharti Global, is set to acquire a 24.5% stake in British Telecom (BT) Group, a leading mobile and broadband provider in the UK. Bharti Televentures UK Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bharti Global, will acquire the shares.

According to the deal, an initial purchase of a 9.99% stake will be made, and the remaining 14.51% will be acquired after regulatory approvals.


Bharti and BT’s relationship dates back over two decades. BT owned a 21 per cent stake, along with two board seats in Bharti Airtel between 1997 and 2001.

Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Bharti Mittal, said, “This investment aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening India-UK ties.” It will enable further advancements in areas like AI, 5G R&D, and core engineering, he added.

Barclays Bank acted as the sole financial advisor during the transaction, while Linklaters LLP provided legal counsel.

Allison Kirkby, CEO of British Telecom, welcomed the investment, and said “…this scale of investment from Bharti Global is a great vote of confidence in the future of BT Group and our strategy.”
