Billionaire Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Enterprises and private equity firm Warburg Pincus are set to acquire a 49 per cent stake in Haier India, industry sources said on Friday. The move is expected to deepen Bharti’s presence in the consumer appliances market while bringing fresh capital and strategic backing to the local operations of the global brand.

The proposed transaction will see Bharti Enterprises and Warburg Pincus jointly invest in Haier’s Indian business, which specialises in a wide range of home appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and small domestic equipment. Haier India has built a strong distribution network and brand presence in recent years, contributing to steady growth in the competitive consumer durables segment.

Officials familiar with the matter said the investment underscores confidence in India’s growing demand for home appliances, driven by rising disposable incomes and expanding retail reach beyond urban centres. The partnership also reflects an interest in accelerating product innovation and strengthening supply chain capabilities within the country.

Haier India will continue to operate under its existing management, with the new shareholders expected to support strategic initiatives and market expansion plans. The terms of the deal, including the valuation and timelines, are yet to be finalised and subject to customary approvals.

A representative close to the negotiations said, “This partnership brings together local market understanding and global business expertise, which can unlock further growth for Haier India.”

Once completed, the transaction is likely to bolster competition in the consumer appliances sector and create opportunities for scale in manufacturing, distribution and technology adoption across the Indian market.
