Apple Inc. has recently expanded its Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities by acquiring the AI startup DarwinAI, based in Canada. This strategic move has led to the addition of numerous DarwinAI employees to Apple’s AI division, as reported by Bloomberg News. The acquisition, completed earlier this year, aims to bolster Apple’s position in the generative AI sector, an area where it has lagged behind competitors such as Microsoft and Google. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
As part of the acquisition, Alexander Wong, a notable AI researcher from the University of Waterloo and a key figure in DarwinAI’s development, has taken on a directorial role within Apple’s AI group. DarwinAI is recognized for its innovative AI technology, which is utilized in the visual inspection of manufacturing components, catering to a diverse range of industries. The acquisition signifies Apple’s continued investment in AI technology, aiming to enhance its generative AI offerings and maintain competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
