Ambience Healthcare announced on Tuesday that it has successfully raised $70 million during its Series B funding round. This significant investment aims to empower healthcare professionals with AI-driven capabilities. The funding round saw contributions from existing backers, including Kleiner Perkins and the OpenAI Startup Fund, alongside new investments from Andreesen Horowitz and Optum Ventures. According to CEO Mike Ng, speaking to Reuters, the funding initiative was taken preemptively.

Based in San Francisco, Ambience Healthcare is at the forefront of integrating large language models, similar to those that power OpenAI’s widely popular ChatGPT, into the healthcare sector. These advanced software tools are designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of hospitals and healthcare organisations.

Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, generative AI has become a global phenomenon, celebrated for its creative and practical applications. However, its potential for transforming industries such as healthcare, finance, and law is now being increasingly recognised. In line with this trend, Google has also introduced AI models tailored for healthcare applications.

Ambience Healthcare’s leading product, AutoScribe, functions as an AI medical scribe, generating medical notes in real-time. The company also offers solutions for generating after-visit summaries, specialist referrals, and ensuring the accuracy of medical billing codes. Although the co-founders have not disclosed the specific large language model provider, they have noted the AI has been extensively customised for different medical specialties and subspecialties, ensuring broad applicability.

Ambience Healthcare’s technology is already being utilised by prestigious institutions, including the University of California, San Francisco, John Muir Health, and Memorial Hermann Health System, highlighting its growing influence in the healthcare sector.
