The security-first paradigm emphasises constant monitoring and management of cloud security risks and threats, employing contemporary tools and automated techniques to ensure that the company is always: Real-time detection of security threats allows for continuous monitoring. To understand how will the availability of MySQL HeatWave on AWS be extremely advantageous for Indian organisations, Nidhi Shail kujur of Elets News Network(ENN) interacted with Sanjay Manwani – MySQL India Sr. Director, Oracle.

Tell us about the journey by far with HeatWave and what are the unique benefits that MySQL HeatWave offers to the customers.

MySQL HeatWave is an innovative in-memory OLAP technology which increases MySQL performance by orders of magnitude for analytics and mixed workloads. It was first announced in December 2020 and since then we have moved forward by innovating it further. Through the last 1.5 years, we have made several major enhancements like auto-configuration with AutoPilot, a strong ML framework based on customer feedback.

Through the MySQL HeatWave offering, we have given customers an integrated MySQL cloud service which they can leverage for transactions, analytics, and machine learning (ML). Additionally, we have simplified the tasks for developers and database administrators by making MySQL HeatWave the only service that enables them to run OLTP and OLAP workloads directly from their MySQL Database in real time and without the need for any ETL.

Anything that we do at Oracle comes with a security-first approach and therefore any data at rest or in transit between MySQL Database and the nodes of the HeatWave cluster is always encrypted. Detailing the enhancements, MySQL HeatWave offers native, in-database machine learning. Being an integrated system there is no need to move data to a separate machine-learning service. This has allowed customers to accelerate ML initiatives, increase security and ultimately reduce costs. We also offer MySQL Autopilot at no additional charge for MySQL HeatWave customers and through this many important aspects of achieving high query performance at scale are automated. These include provisioning, data loading, query execution, and failure handling.

How has it been received by its customers specifically in India?

MySQL HeatWave is a product especially relevant for the Indian market given the pace of digitization in the country. Such a database service is poised to simplify the tasks of many enterprises and ensure cost savings, efficiency and ultimately better overall results. One such customer in India is Noorisys Technologies which was founded in 2011 in India. The IT solutions company deployed MySQL HeatWave to better its performance, increase security, and lower costs along with 24*7 availability. After upgrading to MySQL HeatWave, Noorisys received benefits such as high availability, performance, and on-demand scalability of MySQL HeatWave to expand internationally. With this offering, the organisation was able to better serve its customers with increased overall agility. Now, the company delivers a data management and storage service that is secure as well as cost-effective. Noorisys also leveraged the 24*7 Oracle Premier Support which allowed their core resources to focus on more mission-critical tasks. There are many such Indian and international customers who are enhancing their services across the world as also in India.

Tell us about the latest announcement about MySQL’s availability on AWS.

The latest announcement of MySQL HeatWave’s availability on AWS is a testament to our commitment towards our customers. We believe in giving choices to all our customers in our critical offerings. Many MySQL HeatWave customers were using AWS and there were others who wished to leverage HeatWave on their existing AWS infrastructure. We understood that an important requirement was to support these customers and reduce data egress fees. While it is possible to run the MySQL database in AWS while running HeatWave in Oracle cloud it obviously gives a better latency if both MySQL and HeatWave are running on the same cloud. To immediately address this, we aimed to offer AWS customers a choice to leverage MySQL HeatWave and at the same time keep their data with AWS. This means that customers need to make only a single change, add MySQL HeatWave to AWS; instead of having to move to a completely new cloud to experience the unparalleled performance, better price and improved productivity of MySQL HeatWave.

MySQL HeatWave on AWS is optimized for AWS and offers superior architecture delivering better overall performance. We ensured that with this service, we deliver a truly native experience with an interactive console and millisecond-level latencies for applications. Keeping a security-first approach, this offering brings with it several comprehensive security features including server-side data masking and de-identification, asymmetric data encryption, and a database firewall. Additionally, AutoPilot and HeatWave ML are also available with MySQL HeatWave on AWS. As I said earlier, MySQL Autopilot offers workload-aware, ML-based automation of various aspects of the application lifecycle. HeatWave ML provides essential in-database ML capabilities allowing customers to securely leverage ML on real-time data efficiently.

How do you think it will benefit Indian customers?

The availability of MySQL HeatWave on AWS will prove to be extremely advantageous for Indian organisations on AWS seeking to leverage MySQL HeatWave. This is also aligned with the country’s digitization agenda where we want to contribute by making cloud and cloud-related services affordable, accessible and easy to use. One of our Indian customers, 6D technologies has been able to simplify their data infrastructure for both OLTP and OLAP with sub-second response time. With an easy-to-use web console, they have achieved greater visibility to workload-related performance metrics. Since leveraging MySQL HeatWave on AWS they have experienced 139X faster complex queries compared to AWS RDS and Aurora. With all its benefits, they have been able to achieve their goal of delivering superior customer experience and increasing their overall performance.

With multiple cloud data centres in Hyderabad and Mumbai, Oracle offers data localization and disaster recovery for Indian customers who need it on Oracle Cloud.

We have a large team of MySQL engineers in India, some large Indian customers feel more secure that feedback on critical issues is dealt with on India time and by local engineers.
