OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets for artificial intelligence, highlighting the country’s rapid adoption of AI tools and expanding digital ecosystem. Speaking on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Altman described India’s AI opportunity as “extraordinary” and noted that the country could currently be OpenAI’s fastest-growing market.
Altman revealed that India now has more than 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT, including students, educators, developers and entrepreneurs. He said the scale of adoption demonstrates how quickly AI is being integrated into everyday workflows and innovation across sectors.
During the summit, Altman also announced the launch of the “OpenAI for India” initiative, aimed at building infrastructure, strengthening skills and forming local partnerships to develop AI solutions tailored to the country. As part of this effort, OpenAI will collaborate with the Tata Group to expand access to AI technologies and support enterprise adoption, workforce upskilling and ecosystem development.
The collaboration includes plans to develop AI-ready data centre capacity in India under OpenAI’s global Stargate initiative. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will provide infrastructure through its HyperVault data centre business, beginning with 100 megawatts of capacity and potentially scaling to 1 gigawatt over time.

Altman noted that India’s strong technology talent base, supportive policy environment and widespread optimism around AI position the country to play a major role in shaping large-scale, democratic adoption of the technology. The planned infrastructure is expected to allow advanced AI models to operate securely within India while meeting data residency and security requirements.
