
Anil Kumar Lahoti, the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), has been unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (SATRC). He currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Council.
The outgoing chair of SATRC is Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). TRAI announced Lahoti’s appointment while hosting the SATRC’s 25th annual meeting, which is currently being held in New Delhi from 11–13 November.

The SATRC meeting is a yearly gathering where the heads of telecommunications regulatory authorities from member countries discuss and coordinate on regulatory and other key issues pertaining to telecommunications and ICT. This event includes sessions that discuss regulatory matters, industry engagement, and the exchange of regulatory insights.

The SATRC’s initiatives involve senior representatives from South Asian regulatory bodies, currently encompassing nine countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Representatives and affiliate members from these nations are actively participating in SATRC activities.

On 11 November, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications, delivered a keynote address, talking about transformative objectives and progress within South Asia’s telecom sector. The outgoing chair, Mohiuddin Ahmed, outlined regional telecom priorities, while Lahoti, in his welcome speech, discussed India’s commitment to improving telecom collaboration in the region.
