Tata Group’s new semiconductor plant in Assam is set to produce 4.83 crore chips per day using technologies developed in India, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said.

On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran performed the Bhumi Pujan for the Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district.

Vaishnaw said, “The construction of the plant has started in short span of five months after the project was approved. It will manufacture about 4.83 crore chips per day.” All three major technologies that will be deployed in this plant have been developed in India, he added.

These chips will be used in vehicles, including electric vehicles and several communication and network infrastructures. The facility is expected to be operational by 2025.

Vaishnaw stated that the establishment of a semiconductor unit leads to the creation of numerous downstream and upstream jobs due to its complex ecosystem. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran revealed that the plant is indeed creating 27,000 jobs, with 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect employment opportunities.

The India Semiconductor Mission, Vaishnaw revealed, aims to develop 85,000 skilled professionals. There are nine institutes in the northeast that are currently preparing talent development for the industry.

These institutes include NITs in Silchar, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Agartala, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and two institutes in Meghalaya—North Eastern Hill University and NIT.

Vaishnaw called the semiconductor unit in Assam an “important milestone,” while talking about the “Act East” policy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasises on.
