Donald Trump announced a $500 billion investment plan to build AI infrastructure in the US during the second day of his presidency. The project, named Stargate, is a joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. Trump was joined by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison for the announcement.

Stargate will focus on creating advanced AI infrastructure, with $100 billion to be invested immediately. Trump claimed Stargate is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs in the US and help remain a global leader in AI and technology, and competitive against nations like China.


What is Stargate?

Stargate has been formed to push AI development in the US, to support re-industrialisation and to enhance national security through AI advancements. Key stakeholders include SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, with SoftBank managing finances and OpenAI overseeing operations. Masayoshi Son will serve as chairman, and partners include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI.

Construction for Stargate’s physical infrastructure has begun in Texas, with plans to expand nationwide. The project focuses on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) and aims to solidify America’s position as a global leader in AI innovation.

Trump committed to maintaining production within the US, and discussed the importance of energy and infrastructure in supporting the project. He described China as a competitor and expressed urgency in accelerating development through emergency declarations.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, called Stargate one of the most important initiatives of this era, with the potential to revolutionise industries, especially healthcare. Altman said he believed in AI’s ability to improve disease diagnosis and treatment, predicting that it will drastically enhance global healthcare standards.

SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son committed $500 billion to Stargate, acknowledging Trump’s role in creating opportunities for such large-scale investments. Son emphasised the project’s focus on solving real-world problems and pushing innovation.

Larry Ellison, Oracle’s CEO, expressed his pride in being part of Stargate. He pointed out how AI can improve electronic health records and help doctors better understand patient needs. He also mentioned that the construction of data centres for the project has already started in Texas.
